Does anyone have a clue as to why Daz is giving away $800 of software?

One suggestion elsewhere on the forum is that they have not sold enough add-ons to cover the cost of the research and development of DS4. Thus they're hoping that by gving away the platform (DS4) they will encourage more people to start stumping up cash for the add-ons that only work with Genesis/DS4.
I guess there is also the sceondary hope that they can convert more poser users to DS.

Hmm. hadn't thought of that. There is a long list of al la carte add-ons. If it works for them good. I just get nervous when a software company has a fire sale.

Daz do some odd things at times. I kinda got fed up at one point because everytime I forked out the full price for something it seemed to come up as a fast grab a few days later or 'for sale' at a reduced price.
I've just download the 'pro' version that appeared in my downloads, installed it and it's telling me it's the 'advanced' version. Have to download it again and compare. Not much fun when you're on limited bandwidth

Did you enter the "new" registration code from DAZ? I had Advanced, got Pro, then clicked on "Register" and entered the new code and re-started Studio and it is definitely Pro.

Thanks so much Momster. It didn't ask and thus I didn't get to enter the new registration number but will give it a try later this week.
Been busy with another problem that I 'thought' might be the fault of DS4 'pro'. Reality started rendering a pure black screen. Never had a problem before but then realised I'd also updated graphics card drivers. Checked the list of new things that the latest reality brought and sure enough there it was. Some kinds of nVidia cards do this and you need to set the openCL workgroup to 64.
Gotta admire Paolo, he's giving me answers before I ask questions now.
Many thanks again The_Momster.

I don't know this, but my take is that DAZ is giving away all of their 'flagship' software so they'll be swimming in red ink. It could be that another company has been sniffing around and considering a hostile takeover. The market is certainly ripe for that kind of thing again. That or they've finally realized they shot themselves in the foot with DS4 and Genesis. They've alienated a huge part of their customer base, and it's costing them hard cash sales. Maybe they think by giving their software away, they're going to woo Poser users. (I know of exactly two people who have made the switch.)
That's my opinion, for what it's worth (which is nothing). But they're certainly becoming the proverbial 'poison pill' as a business. Why buy them out if they've already given away their best????

I'm not sure about being bought out but nothing surprises me in business these days.
My guess is more along the lines of maybe they're trying to affect sales of poser pro. It came out recently and from the renders I've seen done by it, it's a nice bit of kit to have. Daz may simply be saying 'you can pay big bucks for that, and still maybe have to buy some content from us for it OR you can embrace this new technology we have for free and only need to buy what you want'.
DS4 does have a few advantages over poser but most poser users I know (mainly from the poser newsgroup) are not in a hurry to jump ship and, as you rightly say, it's alienated some of them further.
I like using DS, love using Bryce and really really enjoy using reality/lux so they'll have me as a customer so long as they're in business. Bt I'll still whine and moan occasionally at some of the things that they do.
