The Reality SoftBox gives you unprecedented control of your lighting in Studio.

Aptos, CA.

Update:
The Reality Softbox is now AUTOMATICALLY included in Reality 1.2, which is a free upgrade for all users of 1.0x.

You no longer need to download the Softbox separately. If you have Reality 1.0, and want the Softbox, update your version of Reality to 1.2 by resetting your download in your DAZ account.

Today Pret-a-3D releases a free DAZ Studio prop for their Reality plug-in. The "Reality Softbox" is a Studio prop that emulates a photographer's softbox complete with adjustable panels and patterned cut-outs. This light prop makes it both easier and faster to add creative lighting to your Studio scenes.

  • The Reality Softbox makes it possible to control the spill and focus of the light by using a built-in feature called a "snoot" that "tunnels" the light until it floods the scene at the right point.
  • Another feature, the built-in texturable "gobo," allows the Studio artist to add all kinds of patterned cut-outs for creative application of light effects and reflections. Some samples of cut-out patterns are included with the product and others can be created in minutes by the artist.

A fully-featured video tutorial that explains how to use the Reality Softbox is included here.

I downloaded and installed the new Softbox, Gobo, Snoot, and textures for the Reality Plugin. When I tried to load the Softbox, I got the message that it was written in a newer version of DAZ|Studio, and to download that version.
The version I have is 3.1.1.73 of DAZ|Studio 3 Advanced. Is there a newer version. Also, I've found with newer versions on the Macintosh that often features are lost and new bugs are introduced. So, I'm hesitant to install a newer version. Is there a newer version of DAZ|Studio 3 Advanced that actually does work with no loss of features and with no new bugs, on the Macintosh? If so, do I just reset my download in my Account History, in order to get the new version?

Hi inquire.

I saw that you have received the right answer in the DAZ forum. I updated the Readme in the Soft Box to list the required version of Studio and I included a link for the download. Sorry about your inconveniece.

Not quite sure what you are saying, but I guess there won't be a version of the softbox that works with DAZ|Studio Advanced version 3.1.1.73. Too bad. I could relate horror stories of trying DAZ betas on my Mac. Are you using the latest Mac OS, version 10.6.4, on an Intel Mac? I'd use Softbox in a flash if it would work with my current version of DAZ|Studio.

Part of the right margin of your answer and of my post are cut off as I read them in Safari on Mac OS 10.6.4. I can't see all of the words. Why is that? Doesn't happen in the DAZ Forums. That's why I couldn't get your answer straight. I couldn't read all of it. Hope you can read everything I'm posting.

Hello,

I have downloaded the Soft Box and it appears to be working OK.  It is really

excellent!

I am now trying to make my own GOBO by copying one of your images and then

modifying it.

I have also copied one of your scripts, edited it and changed the file name to pint

at my .PNG file and it appears to work well in DS.

However, the render engine rejects it, stating that there was an error when checking

the file size…  Cry

Am I just being a bit silly, of is there something special I need to do?

One other think I noticed is that the .PNG file opens in PaintShop Pro, but I cannot

resize it.  Seems to me that I am missing a step, or some .PNG setting. Confused

Thank you in advance.

LA Smile

P.S. The text from this posts looks like it goes under the right hand margin in Chrome…

It does not seem to go to the next line, or wrap, at the correct moment.

Imagine, and you are there.

To create your own Gobo material you don't need to edit the script. Simply apply one of the predefined textures, like the circle, go to the Surface tab, replace the circle PNG file with your own and then select Files/Save as a material preset. It's a bit simpler and safer.

However, the render engine rejects it, stating that there was an error when checking

Without seein the source of your script I cannot say but just use the procedure that I outlined and you should be fine.

I would not resize it as 512x512 is the right resolution for this application. There is nothing special about the PNG file. You probably need to double check the procedure with your program documentation. I woul dhelp you but I use Photoshop and I have no knowledge how PaintShop works.

Cheers.

YES!!!  Wahay!!!!

That was fabulous…  And much simpler! Cool

I added the circle, then told GOBO to use my .PNG using DS and BINGO! Surprised

Thank you ever so much for your help!

I am trying different products for a graphic novel I am writing and this is so

beautiful…  Nothing else seems to have come close really.

Thank you so much for your help, and so fast too!

Hey Paolo, thanks for the great prop, it works really great!

Just one idea, in case you want to upgrade the Softbox:

Why not place a spotlight (named HouseLight) right in the middle and in front of the plane to make aiming of the Softbox easier? You just "look" through spotlight while having the Softbox selected and use the Parameter tab to place the Box where you want/need it.

Nabou, I think Paolo has to add the order numbers by hand to his data base, so it may take a day or two, especially when it is the weekend. Hard working people need a break every now and then! ^_-

Paolo,

I can't thank you enough for creating reality and the softbox tool.

As a portrait photographer, you have given me fresh inspiration and the ability to

create poses / scenes I want to shoot in real life. I watch your tutorials over and over

as well as all the fantastic support you have given to your customers.

I learn from you all the time and use your renders as a standard for

what I want to achieve.

I can't wait for the newest version to come out. Will it be available still in 32bit?

The softbox as a light source and the tweeks to skin glossiness really helped my renders.

Using the dof in reality and being able to add Bokeh effect ,

play with exposure, and sensitivity have really made me feel like

you have designed this with photographers in mind as well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The more I use your product, the more I like it. I want to buy more stuff from you

and if you ever need a testimonial, I'm your man.

Thanks again,

Robert

Hi Robert.
Thank you very for the glowing feedback. I noticed that photographers are the first to be excited about Reality. Light in 3D finally behaves as it's supposed to :)

For somebody like me there is really no bigger satisfaction than to see that my little plugin is helping artists all over the world to achieve their vision.

Yes, the next version will run in the same configuration, you will have the choice of 32 and 64 bit version for Windows and the single 32 bit version, with 32 or 64 bit Lux, for Mac OS. Nothing has changed in that area. Lux on the other hand has switched to 64 bit only for the 0.8 version because of the support for OpenCL. It might be that they will be releasing a 32 bit version of 0.8 later on. I'll find out.

Thanks again for the enthusiastic and positive feedback, it's very much appreciated.

All the best.

ROFL………………I spend more time playing with Reality then I do with Daz………..Laugh

I love the fact that with a few simple Reality clicks, you are able to achieve vastly different but, totally acceptable light changes to your project. In the end you have the hard decision on which one to use.

Whereas, with Daz lights you could spend forever and still not get anything worth seeing!Yell
