The most common cause for this issue is pasting the serial number in the wrong place. Check if all the characters are present in the field. If they are not it's very likely that you have pasted the serial number starting at the second or third character in the field. Erase the data and make absolutely sure that you have the cursor in the leftmost column of the serial number field and paste again.
