AMD Radeon LuxRender users

Postby rattletat » Wed Aug 10, 2016 3:01 am

Can you please describe your experiences when using GPU OpenCL rendering? What GPU model your using and what limitations do you encounter? Is it worth it? Any recommendations for AMD users? Any issues that exist so it can be highlighted to AMD?

Using my R9 Nano, with 16.7.3 drivers, thinks are pretty terrible. I cannot seem to render scenes with environments + 1 character with hair and basic clothing, because LuxRender crashes while gobbling up memory and hard disk space (virtual memory) like no tomorrow.

The GUI Updating phase takes anywhere between 10-15mins if it doesnt manage to crash, before rendering starts. At the same time, OpenCL Intel CPU rendering starts within <1min.

Tried switching back and forth to Reality 4.1 to 4.3 and thinks are not the same.

Known issues:

1. Lines:
Ex1: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=517&hilit=AMD#p4245
Ex2: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=432&p=3591#p3591

Solution: Fixed by reverting to OpenCL 1.9 / Drivers 15.12

2. Long compilation times

Solution: Fixed by reverting to OpenCL 1.9 / Drivers 15.12

It's the AMD 16.x drivers. They somehow broke OpenCL on many AMD GPUs, including my R9 390. There was an updated driver recently (16.30) but I haven't tried rendering anything with OpenCL using that version.

Any 15.x driver version works fine with OpenCL

Okay, so I managed to get the best of both worlds (ie old OpenCL + driver improvements). I grabbed the AMD OpenCL drivers from the 15.12 package (which correspond to v1915.2)

1. amdocl64.dll
2. amdocl.dll
3. amdocl12cl64
4. amdocl12cl.dll
5. amd_opencl32.dll
6. amd_opencl64.dll

Directory is: C:\AMD\Radeon-Crimson-15.12-Win10-64Bit\Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF\B297238

There are two ways to solve it:

Method 1: Download latest driver from AMD's website, extract the files, goto the NEW folders directory and replace the OpenCL dlls with the 15.12 package OpenCL dlls. Then install the driver. During installation it will give some kinda "invalid signature error" but just proceed with the installation.

Method 2: Install the latest drivers as is. Take the 15.12 package OpenCL dlls and place them in the Reality and Luxrender folder. That way luxrender will use the old OpenCL dlls to render :D

Hopefully AMD will work towards fixing the issue with their OpenCL system. Already reported the bug through their online "driver bug" submission form and provided them relevant links.

Apparently with the newer 16.10.2 drivers, if you replace the 6 files the GPU is no longer detected by Reality (and Luxmark). Sad.

So a windows 10 update installs Crimson drivers 16.6

Apparently there are two OpenCL files now:

http://i.imgur.com/35kaFZw.jpg (61KB is 15.12 and 119KB is from the 16.6 package)

And Reality registers 2117 (the newer OpenCL version)

and startup is like the previous stable version.

Cant tell exactly if the issue is fixed, or system is using 15.12 drivers while saying its 16.2 ones. Anyone else with Radeon graphics report the same?

Edit:

Cleaned up my system with DDU (driver uninstaller). Let windows 10 install Crimson 16.2.

Reality shows AMD OpenCL 2117.13

Renders just fine!

Any solutions to this problem? I'm using 2 x AMD R9-R295x2 with latest RadeonSoftwareAdrenalin driver version 17.50.02 and latest OpenCL version 23.20.150002.11 using the latest Daz3d 4.10 Pro. The CPU option of the OpenCL works find but the GPU option will not work. It just sit there without doing any rendering.
Please advise.

Having basically the same problem. The latest OpenCl drivers apparently don't work with LuxRender, according to the Reality FB forum. Trying to roll back to the OpenCL 1.2 drivers, but can't find one that old that works. This will be fixed with the next LuxRender update (from the forums), but I don't know when that will be. Right now I can render simple scenes in GPU, but more complex scenes freeze or crash LuxRender.

No problems with latest LuxMark version, it sees and runs all modes with my R9-290X 8GB boards just fine, regardless of OpenCl driver version.

Got myself a Vega56 and its back to breaking heads with LuxRender. Had the GTX 1070 before it and wow iRay is something else.

Im hoping someone can make a Daz to Blender (ProRender) script - a Daz to Cycles script exists already
