Is Luxrender gone?

Postby salieri » Wed Mar 21, 2018 3:58 pm

Perhaps I'm over-reacting, but has the Luxrender site been looted? I went to download a Linux version of Lux today and kept encountering "Unable to Complete Request, You can go to the home page or try again." messages.

Casting about on the web for people with similar experiences brought me to someone who claimed that the site had been hacked and basically that there was nothing left. What was most alarming was the fact that this post was made a while ago, meaning that the Luxrender site has been derelict for some time now, like there's no one at the wheel. Is this true? Does anyone know anything?

Aside from wanting to get my hands on a Linux build of Luxrender, I want to see it prosper and get to version 2.0. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Luxrender is up and running again.
And the second question?
The future is uncertain as how and what. Older developers are gone and new ones arrived.
This is a problem with opensource software, it all depends on people with jobs and families.
The most do the programming in there own free time. So a big respect from me is on his place.
But you can see that Luxrender is falling behind the big boys, fast.
If you look at a simple thing, Light portals for windows, supported with most render engines. It is a life saver if you want indirect sunlight in your living room trough the windows.

See the sample picture,
One HDRI is lightening the complete indoor scene and it was done with light portals in front of the windows.
Render was done with Corona renderer for Maxon Cinema 4D

this would be funny if it weren't happening to me

Thanks, Marcel, but I'm not seeing that Luxrender is back. The luxrender.net site appears to be a zombie. All binaries except for Windows 64-bit are gone, and the Reality for DAZ Studio link has been taken over by a domain squatter. I agree that the Luxrender team is an extraordinary bunch to do what they did. And x2 on portals! Much of life takes place in rooms with light coming from outdoors.

While the official site of LuxRender is dead, with the devs primarily abandoning the project, living a broken site. LuxRender is being resserected on the forums in different builds, for only Windows I’m afraid. A former dev gave me a link to their site contains a dev LuxRender 1.7 Build for Linux: http://www.jensverwiebe.de/Jens_Verwieb ... tware.html
The project is being revived in a new for for windows and Linux at the moment, here: https://luxcorerender.org/download/

Many thanks, 212antt. I feel better now.

Sometimes this is the way good things disappear. People lose interest, and a large body of work withers and blows away. I'm glad to hear that there is an effort to maintain Lux, and most importantly that the content of the project has been preserved.

They've been working with luxcore 2.0 (http://www.luxrender.net/forum/viewtopi ... 73#p127888):

Why Lux(Core)Render v2.0 ?

Because LuxRender project was dying under the weight of a lot of old abandoned code. All active developers had the strong feeling a fresh start was required. The "Core" between "Lux" and "Render" is there to highlight the new project focus. However the "v2.0" is there to re-mark the continuity with 10 years of development and experience.

In other words, they're not abandoning the project, they're just updating it, and I think it's good news; Luxcore 2.0 is still beta, but if you want to test it, you can export lux files (lxs) to luxcore files (cfg and scn) following the instructions on:

http://www.luxrender.net/forum/viewtopi ... 34&t=10820
