No GUP Akceleration on RX580 :(

Postby bawell » Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:22 am

Daz 4.10
LuxRender 1.6.0
Reality plugin® version 4.3.1.16203
Windows 10 pro 64 bit
Radeon Software Version 18.3.2
The render just stays black and GPU load is 0% , using my CPU works fine but I cannot render with the GPU

Update
The problem only occurs after adding any genesis (2 ,3 or 8 version) character.
When I remove the character from the stage everything works fine.

I'm seeing something similar. Only, if I leave it long enough, the render eventually gets going. As in leave it for 30 minutes or more. It's very strange.

Do you have CPU with integrated GPU as mine?

Actually, yes! Though I would have said no before I looked it up... never used it. Don't have any drivers installed for it, as far as I know. It doesn't appear in Windows device mananger.

I'm using a Intel i5-3570K CPU (HD 4000 grapics) & an AMD Radeon R9 390 GPU. Only AMD openCL installed, AFAIK.

The behavior is consistent. My last two renders only got started after nearly one hour, but then they ran perfectly.
(3 characters, 3 lights, Reality Cube prop + a bunch of clothing - rendered at 1800 x 2250 , only maxing out at 37% of available GPU memory)

Do you think it's related to the integrated GPU somehow?

After many tests. It is not a problem with intel graphic.
It is some kind off a problem with lights.
After I deleted all lights from my scene rendering started faster.

My current best guess is that I'm simply lacking enough system RAM. The machine has 16GB of RAM, but I can see that during the "dark period" before I get anything visible in the viewport, LuxRender has taken all available memory. (But even rendering with 4 lights at 2250x2250, I only top out the graphics card at 59% of the available GPU RAM (8 GB), so the scene isn't too large for the GPU, but something in the scene preparation is clearly using a lot of RAM, possibly making it so slow.

On my system, the "long dark period" does indeed seem to be related to lack of system RAM. After upgrading my box to *24GB RAM (up from 16) I now get a first visible image within 10 minutes (down from 1+ hour).

(*I intended 32GB, but when I opened the machine to put in the two new 8GB modules, I found 4x4GB staring back at me, instead of the 2x8 I was so sure I would find...)

It is lack of GPU ram. I had the same problem with my old video card, changed it for a bigger card and only occasionally with large scene's has longer black screen time.
this would be funny if it weren't happening to me

Not in my case. My GPU card has 8GB, and the monitoring tools suggest the peak usage is less than half of that, even for what I consider large scenes. The "dark period" is during some setup phase. CPU is working, GPU is idle. And giving the machine more system RAM actually helped.
